Integuments

Through history, our society has established idealizations of gender roles, parameters of beauty, and boundaries of personal intimacy.  Through my art, I seek to question these constructs.  My work is a result of my own attempt to understand my defined identity, sexuality, and bodily interpretation outside of the filters of our culture.  The work is inspired by a fascination with people, both physically and psychologically, and to understand how these two levels of being interrelate to define a person’s inner reality.
My work references mythology, history, pop culture, and science in search of the roots of our culture’s collective attitude towards gender, sexuality, fecundity, and personal freedom of identity.  Iconography from these sources are used in my work through juxtaposition and manipulated forms to make connections or separations between a personal reality and the inescapable labels of society and the mortal reality of a body explained by science.
